POSITION SUMMARY:

The RN circulating nurse's function in the operating room is to work outside the sterile field. Responsibilities of the circulator nurse, which are not delegable, are to manage the nursing care in the operating room, a vigilant observer of the surgical team, and to provide a comfortable and safe environment for the patient's surgery. The circulator nurse functions as a team leader for the surgical room, assuring the team is providing a united effort in the care of the patient and works collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, such as the surgeon, anesthesia provider, surgical assistant, surgical technologists and other assistive personnel. There is one circulator nurse that is dedicated to the care of the patient during the intraoperative phase. Since most patients are sedated or anesthetized and unable to make decisions of their behalf, the circulating nurse using their critical thinking, assessment, nursing diagnosing, outcome identification, planning and evaluation skills to direct the nursing care and coordinate the surgical team's activities for the wellbeing of the patient while the patient's self-care abilities are compromised due to the surgical procedure. The RN can be assigned to Pre-op, PACU, or Circulator with documented competencies in each location. This designation will be decided by the Director or Charge Nurse.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, skills and experience:

* Graduated from an accredited school of nursing.

* Maintain a current valid RN license from the Florida State Board of Nursing.

* Experience in the circulating role of surgery preferred.

* Certification, CNOR, preferred, not required.

* Current BLS from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.

* Current ACLS from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.

* Clear English communication skills, written and oral.

* Vein-puncture/IV therapy required.

* Strong customer service skills.

* Computer experience to include EHR experience strongly preferred.

* Knowledge of CPT/ICD 10 coding preferred.

* Ability to remain professional when working in stressful situations.
